Data Acquisition for Field Monitoring

Data Acquisition

Collecting field data from piezometers, inclinometers, and load cells doesn’t have to be a puzzle. Kingmach data acquisition systems are designed to match the real-world conditions of geotechnical projects—whether you’re monitoring a deep excavation or a long-term dam safety program. Rather than chasing specs that look good in a brochure, these units focus on what actually matters on site: connecting to a mix of sensor types without extra converters, keeping power consumption low enough for solar setups, and logging data in formats that software can read without custom scripts. For engineers who’ve spent time troubleshooting mismatched connectors or proprietary protocols, that practical approach makes a difference.

Technical Detail

Configured around process stability, mold life, and long-term uptime.

Kingmach data acquisition units cover the middle ground between stripped-down loggers and high-end lab equipment. They work with vibrating wire, 4-20mA, and MEMS sensors from various manufacturers, so project teams don’t need to standardize on one sensor brand. Each channel handles excitation and signal conditioning internally; no external signal conditioners are needed for common sensor types. The logging schedule is flexible—from one-second bursts during dynamic load tests to hourly snapshots for long-term piezometer networks. Data storage uses standard CSV or SDI-12 output, which plays nicely with most geotechnical data management software. Build quality leans toward field durability: sealed enclosures, industrial-grade terminals, and surge protection are included as standard, not as add-ons. For compatibility verification, Kingmach provides a sensor library that covers typical output ranges and wiring schemes of mainstream geotechnical transducers. Users who need custom scaling or linearization for unusual sensors can get it pre-configured before delivery.

FAQ

Common technical questions

Can these DAQ units read my existing vibrating wire piezometers?

Yes, provided the piezometer’s frequency range and coil resistance are within the typical limits—roughly 400 to 5000 Hz and under 200 ohms. Most standard vibrating wire sensors from established geotechnical brands fall within this range. The excitation voltage and measuring resolution are pre-set to match common models.

How many sensors can one data acquisition unit handle?

It depends on the channel configuration. A base unit might offer 8 or 16 single-ended channels, expandable via multiplexers. For mixed sensor types, some channels can be software-configured, so you don’t lose capacity by using one channel type for another. If your project has more than 50 sensors, it’s worth talking to Kingmach about a customized node architecture.

What kind of data format does the system output?

By default, logged data comes as CSV or SDI-12 records. Both formats can be pulled into monitoring software like Campbell’s LoggerNet, Geokon’s GK-404, or open-source solutions. The timestamp format is adjustable to UTC or local time, and the header includes channel ID, sensor type, and engineering units.

Is the hardware waterproof for outdoor installations?

The standard enclosure is IP66 rated, which handles rain, dust, and temporary submersion. For monitoring points in manholes or flood-prone areas, a fully submersible IP68 version is available as a special order. All external connectors are industrial M12 or cable gland types, not consumer-grade USB plugs.

Can Kingmach provide a calibration certificate for the DAQ itself?

Yes, traceable calibration for the analog inputs can be done in-house before shipment. This is useful if you’re integrating the logger into an accredited monitoring program. The certificate covers voltage and current input accuracy over the calibrated range, typically at 3–5 points.
